Dentures Q & A

What is the difference between a full denture and a partial denture?

A full denture replaces all the teeth on either the upper arch or the lower arch. A partial denture replaces one or more missing teeth on the upper or lower arch, but not all the teeth on the arch. Dentures include artificial teeth designed to look just like natural teeth, as well as a gum portion that’s tinted pink like your gums.

How are dentures fitted?

Denture fittings begin with an exam of your gums and your remaining teeth. Dr. Ellington takes impressions of the area that he is fitting, and then sends the impressions to a dental lab that specializes in making comfortable, natural-looking partial and full dentures. Once your dentures are ready, you come back to the office for a final fitting and an adjustment to ensure your dentures fit comfortably and securely.

How long does it take to get used to dentures?

The adjustment time can vary from one person to another, but most people get used to their new dentures within a week or two, depending on how many teeth are being replaced and if you’ve worn a denture in the past. To ease into denture wear, you can try talking out loud at home to get used to the way your dentures feel and to improve the way your speech sounds. You can also try eating a variety of foods to get more comfortable with the way the dentures function.

It’s not uncommon to feel as if your dentures are overly large or protruding; these feelings resolve as you become used to the dentures. Over time and with regular wear, your dentures become so comfortable, you forget you’re wearing them.

Do dentures change the way food tastes?

Although it can take some time to get used to eating different types of food, your taste buds are located on your tongue, so dentures do not affect the way food tastes. Some food, like apples or corn on the cob, may remain a little difficult to master, but practice makes these foods easier to eat.

What should I do if my dentures slip or cause sore spots?

If your dentures slip or cause sore spots, that’s an indication that they need to be adjusted. Bring your dentures to every office visit so Dr. Ellington can make adjustments as needed.
